Fortune Cookie Soap Box: Mean Girls Themed Fall Collection

FCSmeangirlsheader.jpg

The latest Fortune Cookie Soap Soap Box arrived on the weekend so, after trying everything out, today’s post is a mini review, first impressions type post for each of the upcoming Autumn scents. Fortune Cookie Soap are an American company that make bath and body products and their signature products it, unsurprisingly, a fortune cookie shaped soap. They release seasonal collections four times a year and these Soap Boxes are full of sample sizes of the upcoming scents in a range of products alongside two full sized products. Calling them sample sizes seems a bit mean considering the amount you get, they’re great travel sized minis and even the body butters can do more than one use if you’re careful with them.

As well as the seasonal collections often having the theme of the season, they also have a second theme. This time the theme is the movie Mean Girls which, I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen in a while so some of the references may go over my head. I was surprised at how many I actually got but fans of the movie will probably recognise everything. I do love how they use in jokes as well as the more well known references when it comes to these themes.

As this is the Autumn (Fall if you’re American) collection it isn’t actually available yet, the release date is August 18th at 6PM CST, I think that’s around midnight here in the UK. It’s worth either staying up late if you want something or waiting a bit as they often restock things a couple of weeks later and things sell out so fast.

Review: Kat Von D Bow N Arrow Gift Set

bownarrowheader.jpg

I’ve had my eye on Kat Von D’s makeup range for a while and it’s been in and out of my basket since appearing in Debenhams here in the UK but, as I can’t get to a store to see the colours and they’re a bit expensive to risk not liking them, I didn’t ever get any. That is until I saw this Kat Von D Bow N Arrow Gift Set on the website, it’s a set of two mini products with one being the Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Bow N Arrow and a mini Ink! Liner Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner pen in Trooper (black). With how long these types of product last me a minis are more than enough to try and I’ve read so many great things about both product types getting them for £14 seemed like a great way of trying them.

The two products are small, the liquid lipstick holds 3ml (0.1 fl oz) and is a browny nude colour and the liquid eyeliner holds 0.2ml (0.007 fl oz) so they’re a good size to try and I think there’s enough in here to last a while. I’ve worn the liquid lipstick quite a bit and there’s not even an obvious dent in the amount of product so it’s big enough for me.

Review: Ultrasun Face SPF30

ultrasunfaceheader.jpg

As we’re in the middle of a heat wave in the UK it seemed like the perfect time to do a review of a sun cream I’ve had since December. I got this mini sized tube of Ultrasun Face in SPF 30 in the Marks and Spencer Advent Calendar and have been keeping it in case we had some sun this summer. I’ve been using it the past week and it’s still going so, although it’s a mini size, it has a fair amount of product in it.

This is a 25ml mini tube, the size you find in quite a few of their sets, but it’s also available in full sized 50ml (£16 – £20) and 100ml (£25 – £30). I’ve found it on a few sites so the prices may vary slightly. This is also the 30 SPF version, it’s the one I got but the one I’d probably choose anyway, though it’s also available in both 15 SPF and 50 SPF, some also seem to have a 50+ but I’m not sure if that’s the same as the 50 SPF. There are also anti pigmentation varieties and tinted ones so they pretty much cater for everything I can think of in the range of face sun protection.

Ultrasun isn’t available in many physical stores in the UK, online it’s available in a lot of places, the two I’ve bought from in the past are Marks and Spencer (though they don’t stock the SPF 30 at the moment) and QVC. Continue reading

Review: Soap and Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo

therushowerheader.jpg

Soap and Glory recently released a dry shampoo, The Rushower, which is available in two different sizes. The smaller travel size, which is 50ml, costs £2.50, with the larger 200ml spray costing £4. Being a fan of Soap and Glory and always on the look out for a good dry shampoo I had to try it. At the time only the smaller size was available but I actually quite like this size, it’s perfect for throwing in a handbag or for travel.

The dry shampoo has the original pink scent, it has a bright citrus and slightly floral scent to me. It’s definitely very perfumey and it reminds me a lot of the Lsuh Snowshowers family of products, that’s a buck’s fizz type scent, for some reason. This dry shampoo has scent release technology that means there are particles that contain scent and the friction from running your hand through your hair is supposed to release the scent, meaning you get the scent a while after you’ve sprayed your hair making it smell fresher for longer. That’s the idea anyway so I was intrigued to see if that would actually work.

Review: Nails Inc Porchester Square

porchestersquareheader.jpg

I only got this nail varnish today but as it was in a magazine offer I wanted to do the post asap because I know how quickly these things disappear and I don’t know how long it’s been out. This Porchester Square nail varnish was a free gift in the UK Elle magazine, which also came with a Cosmopolitan and cost £4.50 which is a great price for an almost full sized Nails Inc polish, these are 10ml compared to the 14 ml of a full sized one. I have a feeling that this one won’t be around much longer as it’s the May edition (with Victoria Beckham on the front) so that tends to mean the June one will be out soon going by when magazines are released.

I can’t seem to find this in the same bottle on their website but it is available in the newer design 14ml bottle here for £15. I’m not sure which style bottle I prefer but I’m pretty sure it’s the same formula so it’s not one of those colours made exclusively for a magazine that you can never find again. That annoys me when you find a colour you love with a magazine but it’s not available afterwards. I also seem to find that a lot of Nails Inc polishes you get free with magazine seem consistently better to me than ones I’ve actually bought full price.

Review: Harry Potter Funko Mystery Minis

harrypotterfunkominisheader.gif

I’m not sure when these were released, though I do kind of want to collect all of them now I know they exist. I found three of the Funko Mystery Minis from the Harry Potter collection on eBay, though as I knew which they were these aren’t exactly mysteries. I think that in the UK these are only available online, with the prices ranging from £4.99 to £12.99 as a mystery, unopened box and the different characters have different prices depending on the rarity.

Maybe it’s just me but there seem to have been a lot of different Funko Mini Mystery box series released, a large amount seem to be from various TV series and a lot of Disney characters. I might have to get a few of those some time in the future.

Review: Eyeko London Skinny Eyeliner Pen in Pitch Black

I’ve never been great with eyeliner, especially liquid eyeliner, but I do keep trying to learn as I love the cat eye looks and the precision you get with a liquid so I am always happy when I get one in a free set or as part of a gift. In the Marks and Spencer advent calendar one of the gifts was a mini version of the Eyeko London Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in Pitch Black. I have had a play around with it, though the cat eye look is still elusive, so I thought I’d do a proper review. This one is a mini at 1.2g but the full sized one is 2g and costs £12 from the Marks and Spencer website.

I don’t think this is a new product, it seems to have been around for a while, but as I’ve tried a few liquid eyeliners over the years I’m always interested to see the ones other people have liked or disliked so thought it might be interesting to someone. I seem to be good at finding things years after they’re released. Does anyone else find that they find something they think is great and new and everyone else already knows all about it?

Advent 2016: Day 21!

Four sleeps till Christmas and I’m not finished with present buying, this is definitely cutting it fine and the advent calendars are looking empty. I have to say that I am loving the snowballs in the Lindt advent calendar. They’re one of the Lindt products I haven’t tried before this and I love the mix of white and milk chocolate and how it’s all melty. They’ll probably be on my list of chocolates to get in the future at Christmas.

The other advent calendars today gave me a bright pink nail varnish in the Ciate Mini Mani Month and it’s called Cupcake Queen which is probably one of the most appropriate names from the calendar, to me anyway. The Marks and Spencer beauty advent calendar has a Pür Correcting Primer for normal skin which will be interesting to try and it’s a great travel size if I like it. The Yankee Candle is another Spiced Orange, one of the scents that has grown on me after the initial disappointment of it not being as orange as I expected the scent to be.

Advent 2016: Day 19!

The advent calendars today have some nice products, both a nail and hair care product that are supposed to help the condition of them so will be interesting to try them both and see how well they work. I have been looking for a similar hair product so it’s always good to get minis to try in that case. The Marks and Spencer beauty advent calendar has a Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm for using on towel dried hair and the Ciate Mini Mani Month has a Nail Saviour, a new product to help improve the condition of your nails in seven ways so till be interesting to see if it actually does everything it claims to. The Yankee Candle is another Winter Glow candle which is a nice scent and definitely one of the ones that isn’t too Christmassy and more just winter so will be a good one for after Christmas in the colder weather, if we ever get the really cold weather here.

We finally finished the decorating today when we put some old baubles on the trees outside and made a wreath for the door, a bit close to Christmas but it’s finally finished.

Advent 2016: Day 15

There’s a bit of a colour match today with the Marks and Spencer Beauty advent calendar and the Ciate Mini Mani Month with the rose gold. I do love this colour so very happy that there are so many products using it this year as a large part of packaging or themes. Today was the day I was least excited about with the Ciate one as it’s the nail file day, it will get used but it’s always disappointing in these kinds of calendars. The Marks and Spencer beauty calendar has a Lip Glossy from the Rosie for Autograph range in Super Model smile, a nice pinky colour that’s fairly neutral and I think would work for most skin tones as it just adds a hint of a darker colour to your own lips. The Yankee Candle is another Cosy By the Fire tea candle today, another one that’s been growing on me as I use it and it’s a great one for a Christmassy feel.
